The Rhode Island Capitol Police has enjoyed a tradition of excellence that began with the inception of the department in 1974. Its members provide protection and maintain safety at about 20 state facilities and offices, including the State House.

They are armed and provide security and law enforcement to all state buildings (Except State Colleges which have their own Police and State Hospitals and correctional facilities). The RI State Capitol Police Officers and the RI State Sheriff's Academies are run in conjunction with the Rhode Island State Police.
